In the past, customers have asked us for advice on how to care for their freshly cut flowers, and we appreciate that you want to help them do so.

It’s essential that the flowers we choose last a long time to be sure your bouquet will arrive in perfect condition when you buy it from Green Door. However, there are still things you can do at home to help them live a few more days.

For any of our cut flower bouquets and bouquets you get as a gift, these instructions work well. They also work for flowers you pick from the garden.

The way you care for them also plays a role. Some flowers last longer than others, so how you look after them is also essential. Many flowers last for 5-7 days, but some, like lilies or anthurium, can last for up to 10 days if they are looked after.

Putting your vase together

First, you need to make a vase. Fresh flowers will last longer if they are in a vase that is not dirty. Bacterial growth will shorten their lives. Drying the vase with a cloth could spread bacteria. Instead, turn the vase upside down so it can drain and dry.

Tap water is excellent for cut flowers. Make it lukewarm rather than cold, and the flowers will drink it more quickly. Fill the vase halfway with water for soft-stemmed flowers, like roses. For hard-stemmed flowers, like tulips, you’ll need more water.

Make your flower food with one tablespoon vinegar, three drops of unscented bleach, and one tablespoon of sugar. Mix with 1 liter of warm water and stir until it’s all mixed.

Please make sure the flowers are unwrapped, then stand them up next to the vase so you can see where to cut them and where the water line is. Remove the leaves below the waterline because they will rot and dirty the water.

Putting cut flowers in a vase

Flowers can be affected by their surroundings, so choose where you want to put them carefully. When you put flowers near radiators, bright lights, or hot rooms, they won’t last as long, so don’t do that.

Keep flowers away from fruit, especially bananas, to keep them from blooming and dying early because of fruit gasses.
